Kuwaiti opposition groups Sunday declared their election boycott a success after a drop in voter tu[1]

[Posted on : 2013-01-04 by Majid Tayyabi] Kuwaiti opposition groups Sunday declared their election boycott a success after a drop in voter turnout, highlighting a growing divide with the royal family. The oil-rich nation held parliamentary elections Saturday that were largely boycotted by Islamist and liberals forces. As Kuwaits official news agency reported that the emir and crown prince were sending congratulatory messages to election winners, opposition groups hailed their boycott as successful. "Despite the governments media campaign to interfere in the electoral process and their clear criticism of the boycott as a peaceful movement ... the ballot boxes came to prove that the majority of the people reject" the elections, the Popular Committee for Boycotting the Election said in a statement. Saturdays turnout was about 40% compared with nearly 60% in Februarys parliamentary elections in which Sunni Islamists and tribal Bedouins made big gains, according to election officials.

The Constitutional Court will begin reviewing the case in which the Cabinet challenged the constitu[2]

[Posted on : 2013-01-04 by Shaikh Saleh bin Ahmed] The Constitutional Court will begin reviewing the case in which the Cabinet challenged the constitutionality of the five-constituencies’ system, with a verdict expected to be passed either by the end of the month or in early October. Fresh elections may be held by the end of the year or in early 2013 as estimated by political sources, reported Al-Qabas yesterday. Meanwhile, sources indicate that changing the electoral system if the court finds the current law as being unconstitutional “will not be carried out by the 2009 Parliament, even if it can convene.” “The Cabinet as well as Parliament’s head office is convinced that amending the law will be a huge mistake because it would add more fuel to the political tension, and give the opposition extra reason to gather citizens in public protests,” sources explained.
