Albania’s parliamentary elections operate according to closed list proportional representation and elect members for four year terms. The last parliamentary elections took place on the 28th June 2009. In these elections, the two largest parties, the Democratic Party of Albania and the Socialist Party of Albania, shared over 90% of the vote, with 46.92% and 45.34% respectively. The Democratic Party of Albania formed a coalition government with the third largest party, the Socialist Movement for Integration. The fourth party, Pole of Freedom, received only 1.82% of the vote and as such fell short of the 2.5% hurdle, which is necessary for seats in the Assembly of Albania. There are therefore currently three parties represented in the assembly. The current prime minister is Sali Berisha.
