Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old progressive state lawmaker, was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, completing a remarkable political ascent and ushering in a new era for the city’s leadership.
Running on a platform focused on empowering working-class New Yorkers and countering policies from the Trump administration, Mamdani secured a decisive victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. His win represents a significant triumph for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
Mamdani’s election is historic: he becomes New York’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian descent, the first African-born leader of the city, and the youngest person to hold the office in more than a century. He will officially assume office on January 1.
Speaking to supporters at his victory celebration in Manhattan, Mamdani acknowledged his unconventional path to City Hall. “The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And I refuse to apologize for any of this,” he told a cheering crowd.
“New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change,” he added. “I will wake up each morning with one purpose — to make this city better for you than it was the day before.”
According to the city’s Board of Elections, more than two million voters participated in the race — the highest turnout for a mayoral contest in more than 50 years. With roughly 90 percent of ballots counted, Mamdani held a lead of about nine percentage points over Cuomo.
Mamdani’s unexpected rise has energized progressives within the Democratic Party, reinforcing calls for the party to embrace more left-leaning candidates and bold policy agendas in urban centers across the country. - Posted on : 09-November-2025
I rarely make predictions, but today Ill make an exception. Within the next five days, I anticipate that Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit the Governor General to request the dissolution of the House of Commons, triggering a federal general election.
Why? The House of Commons is currently prorogued until Monday, March 24. Since Carney is not an elected Member of Parliament, he cannot sit on the House floor as Canadian Prime Ministers traditionally do. This creates a dynamic where opposition MPs can pose critical questions, but Carney would have to rely on Cabinet Ministers to respond on his behalf.
The Liberals are unlikely to allow their Prime Minister to watch from the gallery while key questions go unanswered—especially when calling an election is a viable alternative.
For these reasons, I expect an election writ to be issued in the coming days.
This will be a pivotal moment for Canadians. After nine years under a Liberal Prime Minister, will voters choose continuity, or will they opt for change? The stakes are even higher following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remark that he would rather deal with a Liberal than a Conservative government in Canada.
As Canadians prepare to head to the polls, the choices ahead could shape the countrys future in profound ways. - Posted on : 20-March-2025
Since the 2022 election, Australia’s population has grown by approximately 1.5 million people. However, despite this increase, the House of Representatives will actually lose a seat in the next election, decreasing from 151 to 150. Western Australia (WA) will gain one seat, while both New South Wales and Victoria will each lose one. Although WA has the highest percentage growth in the country, Victoria has seen twice the population increase in absolute numbers.
Given the population growth, it would seem logical for the House of Representatives to expand. Canada, a comparable political system, has followed this approach—gradually increasing the number of seats in its House of Commons to reflect population changes, including an additional 30 seats in 2015, with ongoing plans for further adjustments.
However, Australia faces a unique challenge. Its Constitution requires that the House of Representatives maintain "as nearly as practical" twice the number of seats as the Senate. This means that any increase in House seats would also require an expansion of the Senate, complicating the process. - Posted on : 20-March-2025
