The Azerbaijan National Assembly, also known as the Milli Majlis, is the legislative body of Azerbaijan. The members of the Milli Majlis are elected for five-year terms through a mixed electoral system that combines single-member districts with proportional representation.
In recent elections, the ruling party, New Azerbaijan Party (YAP), has maintained a dominant position, often resulting in a parliament with limited opposition representation. The president of Azerbaijan is elected for a five year term. The current president, Ilham Aliyev, has been in office since 31 October 2003. He received 88.73% in the 2008 elections, which were however boycotted by many opposition parties.
