Election Appellate Authority Cantonment Boards and District and Sessions Judge Rawalpindi Chaudhry Muhammad Tariq Javed quashed decisions of Rawalpindi, Murree and Chaklala cantonment board and allowed 17 candidates of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to take part in the local body elections of cantonment boards
The appellate body directed all returning officers of cantonment boards to also include names of the candidates in the electoral rolls of the contenders who had been declared eligible.
The appellate authority, however, rejecting an appeal of a candidate for being below 25 years of age, disqualified him.
The cantonment boards had rejected the candidates’ nomination papers due to minor technical errors. A total of 27 candidates had filed review petitions against the decisions of the cantonment boards, however, of them, 17 were declared eligible. The hearing of the election petitions will continue on August 7 as well. - Posted on : 08-August-2021
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which swept the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) election in 2015, is facing a hard-hitting situation in awarding tickets, due to factionalism, ahead of the September 12 polls.
Two current members of RCB have decided to contest polls as independents while maintaining ties with former Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisars group.
In the absence of former senator Chaudhry Tanveer Khan, who had played a crucial role in winning the previous RCB polls for the party, former MNA Malik Ibrahim has started consultations about awarding party tickets.
In the 2015 election for 20 seats of Rawalpindi and Chaklala Cantonment Boards, for Senator Chaudhry Tanveer and Malik Ibrar Ahmed, had persuaded contenders to sit in favour of party-ticket holders and as a result, the party sailed through a landslide victory by winning all seats up for grab.
However, this time around, new delimitation and the emergence of several new faces have created difficulties for the PML-N to award tickets. - Posted on : 18-July-2021
