First female mayor in Panchagarh
Zakia Khatun, Awami League party candidate, general secretary of the district women’s Awami League and a member of the central Awami League, has unofficially won the mayoral election in Panchagarh municipality. She received 12,056 votes. Her closest rival and current mayor BNP joint convener Md Touhidul Islam received 9,475 votes. Besides, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA) candidate Shahriar Alam Biplob got 448 votes under the hookah symbol. Zakia, a resident of the Rajnagar area of the district, is an assistant teacher of Dr Abeda Hafeez School and College. Awami League frontrunners
A wide field of ruling party candidates in Panchagarh 1 include the party’s district unit senior vice-president, Mazharul Haque Prodhan, who won the seat in 2008 before standing down in 2014. “I sacrificed my candidacy in the previous election in the greater interests of the party,” he said. “This time I hope to receive a nomination.” Mazaharul hinted at running as an independent candidate if he loses the BNP nomination to any one of the local party’s general secretary Anwar Sadat Samrat or its leaders Naimuzzaman Mukta and Md Monir Hossain. Area is 1404.63 square kilometers. It is bounded by on three sides by 288 km long Indian border, having Darjeeling district on the north, Jalpaiguri and Kuchbihar districts on the northeast, West Dinajpur and Purnea district on the west, Dinajpur and Thakurgaon districts on the south, Nilphamari district on the east. Mojaharul Haque Pradhan of Bangladesh Awami League with symbol of Boat got 156,550 votes while Barister Mohammad Jamir Uddin Sarker of Islami Oikya Jote with symbol Sheaf of Paddy (Minar) got 107,726.
