Hanif Abbasi sentenced to life

The Control of Narcotics Substances (CNS) court on Saturday, while announcing its verdict in the ephedrine quota case, handed life imprisonment to PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi ─ who was contesting elections against Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid from NA-60 (Rawalpindi).

Abbasi was taken into custody by Anti-Narcotics Force from the courtroom soon after the judgement was announced and subsequently shifted to Adiala Jail. The supporters of PML-N leader did try to hinder Abbasi's arrest and offered some resistance but to no avail.

The PML-N leader will not be able to contest the upcoming general elections following the narcotics court's decision.

Judge Sardar Muhammad Akram pronounced the judgment, saying Abbasi was found guilty of selling 500kg ephedrine illegally to narcotics smugglers. He also imposed a fine of Rs1 million on the PML-N leader. - Posted on : 22-July-2018

Sheikh Rasheed

Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed kicked off his election campaign on Sunday.

The AML chief, who set off on a tour of his constituency on a motorcycle, while speaking to media men said that he is thinking of replacing his party symbol from the current pen and a bottle of ink to a motorcycle.

When I come into power, I will ensure the completion of Nullah Leh Highway Express project and Ghazi-Barotha Hydropower Project, Rasheed added.

I will also bring back the looted wealth of thieves, he stressed.

Rasheed further expressed confidence that he will get a RECORD number of votes from both his Rawalpindi seats (NA-60 and NA-62). - Posted on : 26-June-2018

Rawalpindi a strong hold of PML-N?

Once the fort of PML-N, elections will not be as easy for the party in the Rawalpindi district due to fissures in the party.

The PML-N had won all seven National Assembly seats and the 14 provincial assembly seats in the 2008 general elections in the district but only secured four of the National Assembly seats and nine provincial assembly seats in the 2013 elections.

Like in other parts of the province, the PML-N is facing threats from within the party in the Rawalpindi district after the award of tickets for the July 25 elections.

This time, the party will be contesting without former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, who decided to contest the elections independently because of what he says was a mishandling of the Supreme Court decision regarding the Panama Papers leaks. - Posted on : 20-June-2018
